^That is legitimately true of me, though. I know it sounds horrible but I really do care more about animals than I do about humans.

Plus, I don’t think the issue most vegans and/or vegetarians (like me) have with meat is the fact that it requires animal labor; it’s the fact that it requires animal cruelty, animal abuse, animal slaughter. And when the issue is about animals labor, it’s not because they see something inherently wrong with labor - it’s that they see something inherently wrong in the labor of an entire species at the severe detriment of aforementioned species, for the sheer benefit of another species (being us.)

None of this, by the way, is meant to negate the hardship of migrant workers, by any means. That shit’s fucked up. At the very least, they should be paid a hell of a lot more. Like, ya know, a livable wage or something. But that would increase food prices. And there are millions of people struggling to pay for food as it is. So……I don’t think there’s an ethical way to solve this, aside from a meteor smashing into the planet and obliterating half of the human race.

Here’s a thought: we eat way too much in many “Western” countries.
And by eat way too much, I mean we have access to too much food, the majority of which is not good for us, is not really even “food” but food-like substance. And we are horribly wasteful, and gluttonous. And by “we” I mean those of us that can afford surplus amounts of food (so I’m speaking generally in spite of this, but it is this “we” that makes up the majority of the consumer group that overeats and wastes).
One solution—buy seasonally, buy locally, buy in small quantities and eat what you buy/don’t waste…and if only people/we would do this more often it would begin to alter our consumption patterns, in turn altering the amount of food that needs to be imported.
As for the millions of labourers who work for pitiful wages in order to keep our (mostly Western) food prices down…if we became more self-sufficient, those producing and harvesting, say, tomatoes in Mexico would be able to utilize them for their own populations’ food…
I’m oversimplifying, but there are options we haven’t considered, and haven’t attempted to implement because in order to do so we’d all have to join up and “stick it to the economic/trade/government/major corporation man”.
